The Kansas City Chiefs are officially in emergency mode.
With their quarterback room decimated and the season slipping away, head coach Andy Reid has made a swift and desperate move â signing quarterback Shane Buechele off the Buffalo Bills practice squad.
The decision comes after a brutal sequence of injuries that has rocked Kansas City at the worst possible moment.
Superstar Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending double ligament tear in last Sundayâs loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, bringing his year to a sudden and painful halt.
Things went from bad to worse just days later.
Mahomesâ replacement, Gardner Minshew, was forced out of the Week 16 clash against the Tennessee Titans after sustaining a serious knee injury in the second quarter. Though ESPN later reported that Minshew avoided an ACL tear, he was still placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season.
That left Kansas City with just one healthy quarterback.
Third-stringer Chris Oladokun was thrown into action but struggled to stem the tide, as the Chiefs slumped to a crushing 28â6 defeat â their ninth loss of the campaign.
Enter Buechele.
The 27-year-old is no stranger to Kansas City. He first joined the franchise in 2021 after going undrafted out of Southern Methodist University and was part of the roster when the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Yet despite the ring, Buechele has never taken a regular-season snap in the NFL.
After leaving the Chiefs, he joined Buffaloâs practice squad in 2023, only for a neck injury to wipe out his entire 2024â25 season. He narrowly missed out on the Billsâ active roster earlier this year before re-signing to their practice squad â until Kansas City came calling.
Thereâs also a famous sporting bloodline behind the name.

Shane is the son of former MLB third baseman Steve Buechele and comes from a family steeped in elite athletics. In a remarkable twist of history, his father once shared a college dorm at Stanford with future NFL legend John Elway.
Now, with the Chiefsâ season hanging by a thread, Shane Buechele is suddenly back where it all began â and facing the biggest opportunity of his career.
